"We, having by the commandment of the King our Lord, King Francis, set out to discover lands beyond the great ocean, sailed until we came to a land where we found people who received us with great joy. We made them presents of knives, beads, and other small wares, for which they gave us fish and fresh water. We asked them by signs if this was the way to Cathay [China] and if there was gold or silver to be found. They pointed to the west and made us understand that the river went so far that they had never seen the end of it, and that there were no rapids. They also showed us some copper, which they call caignetdaze, telling us it came from the land of the Saguenay, which lies far to the north."
