Kainji Lake National Park, located in Kwara and Niger States, was established in 1978 through the merger of two former game reserves: Borgu and Zugurma. Spanning an area of approximately 5,340 square kilometres, it is Nigeria's oldest national park. The park is managed by the Nigeria National Park Service, a federal agency created to conserve the nation's wildlife and natural habitats. Kainji Lake itself was formed in 1968 following the completion of the Kainji Dam on the Niger River.
