Established in 1979 by Decree No. 46, Kainji Lake National Park was created as Nigeria’s pioneer national park. Situated across Niger and Kwara States, the park covers a total land area of approximately 5,300 square kilometres. It was formed by merging two previously separate reserves: the Borgu Game Reserve, situated on the western side of the Kainji Reservoir, and the Zugurma Game Reserve, located to the southeast. While the Borgu sector is characterized predominantly by savanna woodland and contains abundant wildlife such as roan antelopes and baboons, the Zugurma sector features denser dry forest ecosystems but suffers more heavily from unauthorized livestock grazing. Management of the combined park was initially entrusted to the Federal Ministry of Agriculture before being transferred to the National Park Service governing body in 1991.
