A 72-year-old male with severe ischemic cardiomyopathy experiences an out-of-hospital ventricular fibrillation cardiac arrest. Return of spontaneous circulation is achieved after 25 minutes, but he remains comatose on mechanical ventilation in the intensive care unit. A comprehensive neurology consultation and subsequent testing determine he has suffered severe anoxic brain injury and has a dismal prognosis for meaningful neurologic recovery. The patient does not have a written advance directive, and he never formally appointed a healthcare proxy. Multiple family members are present at the bedside and express conflicting opinions regarding the continuation of life-sustaining therapies. In the absence of a designated proxy or a court-appointed guardian, arrange the following family members in the standard legal order of priority to act as the surrogate decision-maker, from highest priority (first) to lowest priority (last).
- 1The patient's legally married spouse
- 2The patient's adult child
- 3The patient's parent
- 4The patient's adult sibling
