Read the passage below carefully:
In 1909, British geologist Albert Ernest Kitson discovered rich sub-bituminous coal deposits in Udi, near Enugu, while investigating mineral resources for the Mineral Survey of Southern Nigeria. Commercial mining commenced six years later, in 1915, under the administration of the Marine Department. To facilitate the transportation of extracted coal from the mines to port facilities for export, the colonial administration constructed a railway line connecting Enugu directly to the port city of Port Harcourt in 1916. Coal production played a pivotal role in powering Nigeria's railway locomotives and electricity generation facilities throughout the mid-twentieth century until the discovery of commercial crude oil reserves in Oloibiri in 1956.
Based on the passage, commercial coal mining in Udi commenced in 1915 under the administration of the Marine Department.
